WordPress + WooCommerce E-Commerce Setup

✅ 1. Prerequisites & Hosting Recommendations

Before you start, ensure you have:

A working WordPress installation (any host).
A domain name (e.g., yourshop.com).
SSL certificate enabled (free via Let's Encrypt or your host).
At least 512 MB PHP memory limit (WooCommerce recommends 256 MB+).

🖥️ Hosting for E-Commerce: Choose a plan that scales well – Hostinger Business Cloud, SiteGround GrowBig, or WP Engine. WooCommerce needs decent server resources, especially with many products.

Also, set your permalinks to "Post name" (Settings → Permalinks) and make sure your site is using HTTPS.

📦 2. Install & Activate WooCommerce

Go to Plugins → Add New. Search for "WooCommerce".

Click Install Now on the official WooCommerce plugin by Automattic. Then click Activate.

Upon activation, the WooCommerce Setup Wizard will launch automatically. You can also access it later via WooCommerce → Status → Tools.

⚙️ 3. WooCommerce Setup Wizard – Essential Settings

The wizard guides you through five critical steps. Fill them carefully:

Store Details

Store address – Crucial for tax calculations and shipping.
Industry – Select the closest category (helps with defaults).
Product types – Enable "Physical products" or "Downloads" as needed.

Payment

WooCommerce will offer to install WooPayments (or you can add PayPal and Stripe later). You can skip for now and configure manually (see section 5).

Shipping

Enter your shipping zones and rates later, or choose basic settings. For now, set your store's country and currency correctly.

Recommended Extensions

You'll see suggestions like Mailchimp, Jetpack, etc. Uncheck all for now; you can add them later if needed.

Theme

The wizard may recommend the Storefront theme (official WooCommerce theme). It's clean and lightweight. You can also stick with your current theme if it supports WooCommerce.

💡 Note: You can skip the wizard entirely and configure everything manually under WooCommerce → Settings. The wizard just speeds things up.

🏷️ 4. Adding Your First Products

Head to Products → Add New. You'll see the familiar WordPress editor with extra WooCommerce fields.

Product name & description – Write a compelling title and long description.

Scroll down to the Product Data meta box. Choose product type: Simple product for most items, Variable product for sizes/colours.

Set Regular Price (and Sale Price if applicable). Manage Inventory (SKU, stock quantity).

Add a product image and gallery images in the right sidebar.

Configure Categories and Tags for better navigation. Then Publish.

Repeat for all products. You can also import products via CSV using Products → Import.

📸 Product images: Use high-quality, consistent images (800×800px or larger). Compress them with a plugin like Smush to keep load times fast.

💳 5. Configure Payment Gateways

Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Payments. You'll see available gateways. Enable the ones you need:

Stripe (Credit/Debit Cards)

Install the WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway plugin (free). After activation, connect your Stripe account. It supports Apple Pay, Google Pay, and 3D Secure.

PayPal

WooCommerce includes a built-in PayPal Standard option. Enter your PayPal email address. For a better experience, use WooCommerce PayPal Payments plugin (free).

Cash on Delivery / Bank Transfer

Enable these offline methods if needed. They don't require any API keys.

⚠️ Test mode: Before going live, enable test/sandbox mode for Stripe and PayPal to simulate transactions without real money.

🚚 6. Shipping, Tax & Store Policies

Shipping Zones

Navigate to WooCommerce → Settings → Shipping. Add zones (e.g., "Domestic", "International") and assign shipping methods like flat rate, free shipping, or real-time carrier rates (requires plugins like ShipStation).

Tax Settings

In WooCommerce → Settings → Tax, enable taxes. You can let WooCommerce calculate taxes automatically (using services like TaxJar) or set rates manually. For simplicity, many small stores use the WooCommerce Shipping & Tax plugin (free) for automated US sales tax.

Store Policies

Create pages for Refund and Returns Policy, Privacy Policy, and Terms of Service. Then assign them in WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced. These appear at checkout and in the footer.

🎨 7. Customizing Store Design

Your store's look matters. You have two paths:

Use a WooCommerce-ready theme – Storefront, Astra (with WooCommerce module), Blocksy, or Kadence. They integrate seamlessly and offer dedicated shop styling options.
Customize with blocks – WooCommerce provides blocks for product grids, filters, cart, and checkout. Use the WordPress block editor to build your shop page, product archives, or custom landing pages.

With the Storefront theme, you can tweak colors, layout, and typography via the Customizer. For more control, pair it with Elementor and a WooCommerce builder add-on.

🛍️ Quick win: Install the WooCommerce Blocks plugin (often pre-installed) to access modern blocks like "All Products", "Filter by Price", and "Active Product Filters".

Install only what you need. Too many plugins can conflict and slow down your site.

🧪 9. Testing & Launching Your Store

Before announcing your store to the world, run through this checklist:

✅ Place a test order using each payment gateway (sandbox mode first, then a real small transaction).
✅ Check that order confirmation emails arrive (WooCommerce → Settings → Emails).
✅ Verify shipping rates and tax calculations with different addresses.
✅ Test the checkout process on mobile and desktop.
✅ Confirm that the cart and checkout pages are set correctly (WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced).
✅ Ensure your store's privacy and terms pages are linked in the footer.
✅ Disable test mode for payment gateways and switch to live keys.
✅ Create a sitemap and submit to Google Search Console (Rank Math does this automatically).
✅ Install an analytics tool (like Google Analytics via Site Kit or MonsterInsights).
